Home / Info For Artists

Artists,

If you are an illustrator, painter, photographer, or digital artist that shares our vision we may be interested in licensing your art.

How Licensing Works

You sign a contract with us which allows us to add your artwork into our general portfolio, which we then sub-license out to poster printers, distributors, and retailers. They print posters and sell them in poster stores and websites, spreading your artwork and name across the world. You will be paid a 50% royalty of any money we make from your art. We believe in treating our artists fairly by giving them what they deserve, so you make what we make.

Benefits:
  - You get your name out as an established, marketable, professional artist.
  - Maybe one day you will go to a party and your piece will be on the wall.
  - You make money every year for as long as your poster sells.
  - You get to brighten people's otherwise dull, grey, little lives.

How the Contracts Work

Contracts are carefully tailored for each piece to fit the needs of the artist.

Their basic structure is:
 - You remain the copyright holder of your work
 - You grant us the reproduction rights to turn your work into posters.
 - You grant us the rights to retail those posters ourselves, or to sub-license the art to other poster manufacturers
 - You receive a 50% royalty of money made by us from sales of posters with your art.
 - the rights transfered in the contract pertain only to posters, nothing else.

The contracts give you the copyright and gives us only the reproduction rights (only for posters) so we can turn the art into posters and sub-license them into the poster industry, or retail them ourselves, all while setting you up on a royalty for the proceeds. We negotiate the contract on an individual basis for each artist and each piece of art. If the piece is a painting or illustration you keep the original copy.

How to get your art to us.

We need to have extremely high resolution digital copies of art to print posters. The industry standard for printing is 300 dots per inch. That means that to print a 24x36inch poster you would need an image file that is 7200x10800 pixles. In photoshop that's about a 223mb file! In reality 100dpi is high enough detail for a poster, so there is some leeway.

So here's how we do it: For paintings, illustrations, and film photography we have a relationship with a high resolution scanning service here in Santa Barbara. If you're out of the area you can either fedex/ups your work to us or we can find a scanning service near you.

For digital art it can get a bit trickier. If you're working in a vector based program like Adobe Illustrator or a 3D modeling program render the image at 300dpi for 24x36 inches (7200x10800 pixles) or as high as you can. If you're working with in photoshop or a similar program just send us what you have without any sort of web-optimization applied. Don't try to artificialy boost the resolution. We have our own suite of interpolation software that we can use to increase resolution with minimal quality loss. There are limits though and unfortunately we often have to reject work that was made too small to be reproduced as a poster.

The basic idea is the higher the resolution of the file you get to us the easier and more likely it is that we can get it widely published as a poster.
